Half of the ordinary baryonic matter has been tough to find but Fast Radio Bursts made it possible to detect the WHIM. Thanks to Kiwico for sponsoring this video! For 20% off go to kiwico.com/veritasium or use code VERITASIUM at checkout.

    2. Dheeraj Verma

Wow !! 20 minutes after Big Bang anything was possible... why should we assume that the constants were constants?

    3. plan pitz

Is that at 13:13 a 3D Minora in the background?Amazing design!

    4. Akash Kumar singh

I don't know why but after watching your videos I love to read physics

    5. Derek1978

how do scientist tell how far something is away vs how long ago the light was emitted?

    6. anshul p

    7. M. de k.

It was never missing, we just didn't know where it was for a couple million years.

    8. Elizabeth Hudson

      more cgi BS

    9. Genghis Kahl

20 minutes after the big bang... Where did you pull that out of?

Wait, cant deuterium be created in neutron star collisions

    13. mrspidey80

Here, you see bunch of Baryons talking about their missing Baryon brothers and how they were found.

    14. Gordon Green

PS everything you said in this video is based on theory not fact

    15. ss

      Fascinating stuff.

    16. ReadyBuilder1

10 seconds later? Hmm I wonder how we know the exact seconds.

    17. Inayet Hadi

That's because people are waking up to the truth of the flat earth that is why the other half of the universe revealed itself. The truth shall set you free.

    18. Vandita Gupta

Calculation of baryonic matter seems to be a lot of work🙄🙄🤔🤔

    19. MLU8811

We're going to eventually find out that other life forms are the ones sending out those mysterious signals. When we finally learn how to listen in to the waves properly, we'll discover that it's the transmission of a reality TV show named Earth.

    20. Diddely Doe

Best youtube video i've seen in a while

    21. Charles Tang

I really tried so hard to focus...pausing the video to think, yet i still don't understand...

    22. John Elliott

The scientist in me is still skeptical that we're not falling victim to confirmation bias because it feels almost too convenient that we expected 5% and then it actually happened to be 5%. Maybe a decade from now someone sees it from a fresh perspective and realizes it's not adding up the way we thought and we forgot to carry that 1. Then with the new calculation a new mystery arises that leads to understanding dark matter another decade after that.

    23. Willy Dog

So this guys saying there’s walls in space

    24. AKO dutch

I like your videos, you take the right approach in getting the message across, even though it is tough stuff. Clear and instructive voice, much better than the ones that keep making stupid jokes, or speak in a very annoying way with regard to speed, clarity, intonation, diction.

sooooooo my dumb ass is drinking something that was created by the big bang and exists since then.... wtf I can never drink a normal glass of water again.. I drink a Big Bang cocktail

    28. Conductive Ink Alternative

      Very interesting.

    29. iScape Nak3d

Scientists: "We can't find 50% of the matter in space" Also scientists: "We found the missing 50% of matter. It was in space."

    33. Tobias Wegener

First great editing, second It is really impressive, how in a Vertiasium video Complex units are expressed in a visual way with the 26:1000000 Deuterium/Hydrogen atoms. I would just shortly explain parts per million and use it, but the way he done it; it stays much clearer for the audience. So in short, thank you for the great Educational content. :)

Douglas Adams said the missing matter was the packing peanuts that state-of-the-art telescopes shipped across the galaxy were packed in.

    37. alexanderespinoza

      This is super sick.

    38. phil alan

Thumbed down for stupid commercial. I'm a scientist, not a democrat, hence I only deal in fact. Guns kill people? Wow, so dumb. They kill rapists and murderers, hence the entirety of the FBI Data system. If you want to argue factually and scientifically, then guns equal freedom, bar none, it's literally science fact and inarguable.

You told em waves are guided by the magnetic field of the earth but i have never ever found any proof that em waves interacts with magnetic or electric field. If you have please explain or provide me i am in a serious need of that proof. And thank you for the wonderful video.

Please drop Arts from STEM. STEM is hard sciences. Arts are typically muddy and vague. They do not belong together.

    44. Contemplate Eternity

Mainstream science still has a way to go before we understand the universe or ourselves for that matter. No doubt in time we will, but may require a new set of baseline assumptions. Keep an open mind and get ready to have our world rocked in coming years.

    45. Ornge Master

are you sure theres no aliens trying to contact us instead it was just radio waves coming from universal lightning this is a joke .

    46. Aditya Kadam

Wooooh method is so accurate 😳😳😳 Thanks for taking the effort to explain us by easy to understand method ❤️❤️❤️

tired of these geeks acting like they were there and know everything about the universe - fools!

      1. nosuchthing8

They dont know everything, they are just compiling facts and doing science and math. You know, what led to computers and smartphones and TV and electric power etc.

    49. Nick Zbrezny

Thank you. Always wondered about this and was pleased to be updated as I’m not as active as I used to be.

    50. Avery Diercks

      For the algorithm.

    51. Prince of All Saiyans

Orrr you could be wrong? But most likely it is actually missing since humans are so smart and all. Fools

    53. Prince of All Saiyans

Dark matter and dark energy huh??? I’d like to know how all that time & money can be spent on a theory that is constantly being failed to be proven as real. What other theories are constantly being funded even though no proof has ever been found? What about Atlantis? There is more proof suggesting that Atlantis is real over dark matter.

When is the universe going collapse again? Can't wait for the fun times when we read that expanding has stopped and now it's going back to start.

Isn't it gonna be much faster for a supernova to reach us instead pogu it's defo gonna take years after finding out about it to reach us

Nice Where can I go to get more info? I and many others in my community want to know ... Who is in charge or who gives you the approval to have these stories out in the mainstream and claiming there is truth in it. .. Why can I now see these evil enteties giving us false news everyday and their fakery is everywhere Was it the red pill

    68. M W

Because of "the times" i have to ask,.... what is the "gender" of the baryons? Are they trans? 🤭🤭.....🤣🤣🤣..... sorry😔

      1. Prince of All Saiyans

No but the dimensional’s are. 😶🤣😎

    69. Juan Daniel Ozuna Espinal

Why do we talk as if the big bang was a fact, when it is actually a theory of how to universe was created.

      1. Kurt Rexrodt

Theory = Well established and strongly supported by evidence beyond reasonable doubt
